Kids Helpline talks funding

By: yourtown 26 Mar 2014 Kids Helpline

Kids Helpline has increasing numbers of young people reaching out to the service when they're in crisis and we do worry that we cannot answer every call the first time.

WE CARE. WE LISTEN

Currently 40% of contacts go unanswered and we need more funding to achieve a higher response rate.

Sometimes kids can be calling in really distressed states. We can be dealing with people in absolute crisis, at that brink, thinking about suicide, and our role can be to facilitate emergency services and mental health treatment for them. Kids Helpline Counsellor Leo Hede

Kids Helpline costs $11 million a year to run and is funded by the community through art union sales and donations as well as corporate support and government grants.

We have a wonderful group of supporters whose contribution we value tremendously but we need at least another $4 million to provide the best service possible.

ABC News and The Project have covered this issue.

We want children and young people to remember to keep trying if they need to talk to someone. They will get through eventually.

Family, friends and the community can help by donating now. It is everyone’s responsibility to help give young people somewhere to turn during their toughest times.
